I thought with the election of Barack Obama that racism in America had officially ended. Why is it then, after this historic election of America’s first non-white president, that cries of racism are more prevalent than ever before?
I use the term “non-white” sarcastically to illustrate the absurd practice of political correctness. I know our President is a black man. Though if you want to get technical, he is only half black. Is it alright to call him black or am I being racist? The “proper” or “politically correct” term used to refer to a person of color has changed so many times throughout the years that simple minded folk such as myself can get confused. Oh my, I may have done it again in that last sentence by referring to him as a “person of color.” Oh by all means if I have offended any of my readers I do apologize.
The left is the supposed champion of the minority. Blacks and Latinos in particular vote for left leaning candidates in far superior numbers. It is astounding that these same minorities do not know the history of the party they overwhelmingly support.
Let us start with a recent history lesson. Robert Carlyle Byrd is the senior senator from the state of West Virginia. He is a member of the Democratic party and has been a member of the senate since January 3, 1959. He also joined the Ku Klux Klan in 1942 and held positions as Kleagle (or recruiter) and Exalted Cyclops. He is also quoted as saying in a letter to then Sen. Theodore Bilbo (D-MS) in 1944:
“I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side.. Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen of the wilds.”
To his credit, Senator Byrd has apologized repeatedly for his involvement with the Ku Klux Klan, and all seems forgiven. I don’t think a conservative would be given the same courtesy.
Then of course we have the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Would you believe it almost didn’t come about because of the actions of a few Democrat legislators? The bill was reported out of the Judiciary Committee in November 1963, and referred to the Rules Committee, whose chairman, Howard W. Smith, a Democrat from Virginia, indicated his intention to keep the bill bottled up indefinitely. The bill would was referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee, chaired by Senator James Eastland, Democrat from Mississippi. Under Eastland’s care, it seemed impossible that the bill would reach the Senate floor.
The bill came before the full Senate for debate on March 30, 1964 and the “Southern Bloc” of southern Senators led by Richard Russell, Democrat from Georgia launched a filibuster to prevent its passage. Said Russell:
“We will resist to the bitter end any measure or any movement which would have a tendency to bring about social equality and intermingling and amalgamation of the races in our (Southern) states.”
On the morning of June 10, 1964, Senator Robert Byrd (Democrat-W.Va.) completed an address that he had begun 14 hours and 13 minutes earlier opposing the legislation. Wow, our racist little friend gets around. Isn’t it ironic that it was the Republican party that saved the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and yet many blacks regard conservatives as racist. I don’t even need to mention President Abraham Lincoln (Hmmm…..that name rings a bell..) was a Republican. Of course the only thing he did was free the slaves and hold the union together, not at all important actions.
Flash forward to today, and the liberal’s new version of racism. If you don’t agree with President Barack Obama you are a racist. There are actual people in congress, and otherwise that believe this. Rep. Joe Wilson (Republican – S.C.) recently blurted out “You lie.” during an Obama speech on Health Care reform. Of course he did this because he disagreed with something the president said, not because he is racist. Conservatives of course heard him yell, “You lie.” But unfortunately liberals translated this as, “Oh my hell I can’t believe we have a black president!” Even ex-president Jimmy Carter has stated that he believes Wilson’s outburst was based on racism.
The media portrays conservatives as racists as much as they can. The tax protests that occurred on April 15th, according to MSNBC and Hollywood loud mouth Janeane Garofolo were not protesting the fact that government is spending too much money. Nope, according to them we were protesting the fact that we have a black president. The large March on Washington that occurred on Sept. 12th, was once again not in protest to government largess, but in protest of our black president. So, according to the mainstream media I am a racist for not agreeing with this president. The problem with that conclusion is that I also did not agree with everything the last president did, and the one before that. My memory may be poor, but I believe they were both white guys.
Also in a liberal’s mind, only white people can be racist. One largely circulated definition is as follows: Racism = Prejudice + Power. Simply stated it means, black people can’t be racist because they didn’t have the power to make laws or set policy. Now lest they forget, our President is a black man. Their poor excuse, no longer applies. Yes people, anybody can be a racist.
What about Kanye West’s recent rant during Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the VMA awards. Do I believe Kanye West, a black man, was racist towards Taylor swift, a white woman? What about Serena Williams losing her temper during a tennis match and yelling at a line judge? Was Serena, a black woman, racist toward the line judge, a white woman? I don’t think either of these are examples of racism, I just think both individuals used poor judgement. I do wonder what the left would think though if the roles were reversed.
A recent article in Newsweek actually asked the question, ‘Is Your Baby Racist?’ on the cover of the magazine there was of course a white baby.
At the Children’s Research Lab at the University of Texas — Birgitte Vittrup attempted to measure how effective propaganda is at instilling multiculturalism ideology in small children. She found that despite parents’ progressive intentions and the homogenous political correctness of everything they see on TV, children 5 to 7 years old tended to consider blacks but not whites to be “mean.” Another researcher discovered that white kids are racist at six months old. The article includes this gem of a quote:
It’s horrifying to imagine kids being “proud to be white.”[1]
Well there you have it folks, according to Newsweek, racism is inborn. If you are a racist, you can’t help it!
Most people are smart enough to know that racism is not inborn, it comes about from a series of life experiences. Many people do not encounter “multiculturalism” at a young age. Some people are raised in very homogenous areas. Some people learn racism from family, some from friends, others from television, etc. Unfortunately many use racism as an unfounded charge in accusation of those of different opinions.
I have cited examples of liberal racist hypocrisy in this article. But I also believe that there are racists liberals and conservatives. I also know that you don’t have to be white to be racist. There are unfortunately racists of every race and color. In this, the “Post-Racist” America it is usually those that cry racism that are the real racists.
